New Smyrna Beach is located on the central east coast of Florida and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Intracoastal Waterway to the west and Mosquito Lagoon in between the two. New Smyrna prides itself on being a laid-back coastal town, free of the crowds, pollution and noise that plague other Florida beaches.  Named one of "America's Top Small Cities for The Arts," New Smyrna is home to the Atlantic Center for the Arts, an artists-in-residence community and educational facility, the Harris House, the Little Theatre and Arts on Douglas. Frequent arts shows featuring visual and performing arts take place throughout the year.  New Smyrna is also known as "The World's Safest Bathing Beach," because rock ledges 45 miles offshore help protect bathers from treacherous undercurrents.  As for the beach, New Smyrna is the ideal location to go wild with water sports.
